PALS Comes to the Aid of Jack

The Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS) saves another life. In the animal shelter world, this isn’t necessarily newsworthy. Volunteers care for unwanted and abandoned animals on a daily basis. So what makes this story one worth sharing? Well, simply put, it’s Jack and his incredible personality.

In February PALS received a call from the Poweshiek County Treasurer, Lana Taylor. A yellow lab had been abandoned near her home. Taylor was able to gradually feed the dog and gain his trust. Taylor discovered the dog was loving, and would make a great family pet, so she called PALS. This is the story of how PALS met Jack the dog.

With the help of volunteers, arrangements were made to have Jack transported to a vet for examination. It was apparent that he was having some issues walking, and x-rays were taken. The vet discovered that Jack was suffering from deteriorating knees, with his right knee worse than the left. PALS had two choices. The dog could be euthanized, or he could undergo a costly surgery. The decision was simple–Jack had to be saved.

On March 8 Jack underwent surgery. The outcome was great, and Jack was able to come home after just three days recovering at the vet office. He needed to go to a foster home where he could recover with restricted movement and limited activity. Julie Sterk, PALS volunteer and an employee of the Poweshiek County Clerk’s Office, offered to care for Jack.

Once at her home, she carefully monitored his activity, and made sure that for the first two weeks post-surgery he only went on short walks. Each week Jack grew stronger. Now, almost eight weeks post-surgery, Jack is behaving as if he never underwent this surgery. “He looks great. He has put on some weight, his coat looks beautiful, and he adores belly rubs,” says Sterk. She adds, “It’s amazing that after everything Jack has gone through, he still gives unconditional love. I’m glad we were able to help save his life.”

Thanks to the dedication of Lana Taylor and PALS volunteers, Jack will live a healthy and full life. The surgery cost more than $600, and so far volunteers have raised $270 to go toward the bill. If you are interested in contributing to Jack’s fund, you may do so by sending a check to PALS, PO Box 123, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Jack is currently available for adoption, but already has a pending application. If you are interested in seeing Jack and the other wonderful PALS animals, please visit www.HelpPalsAnimals.com.
