High Winds, Rain Smack Grinnell Tuesday April 6th
4/7/2010
Winds reaching 90+ miles per hour, 1.47" rain and hail ranging from .75" to 1" thrashed through Grinnell Tuesday evening causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. A complete city power outage at 5:51 and lasting approximately 8 hours inconvenienced all and created emergencies all around the community. Emergency generators went into effect where lives were in danger and police and fire patrolled for downed lines and distressed situations.
Several training for the Grinnell College Track Team were caught in the pelting of hail and admitted to Grinnell Regional and subsequently released. Likewise, several Grinnell High School tennis team members were caught in the pelting.
Conditions remained stressed Wednesday but recovery progressed everywhere.
Grinnell Mayor Gordon Canfield cautioned residents that scores of phone calls from tree, roofing and general contractors came into city officials requesting information about damage. Residents should be aware of fly-by-night scammers and should anyone approach a residential home they should ask for a SOLICITORS LICENSE issued by the Grinnell city offices.
